Underwater Photography Beginner's Guide: How to Choose the Size of Extension Arm and Buoyancy Arm

Underwater Photography Beginner's Guide: How to Choose the Size of Extension Arm and Buoyancy Arm

1. The Role of Extension Arm and Buoyancy Arm: Why Are They Important for Underwater Photography?
If you are new to underwater photography, you may be curious: Are extension arms and buoyancy arms really necessary? The answer is: It depends on your shooting needs.

Extension Arm: Mainly used to adjust the position of the camera and flash/video light to avoid direct light causing reflection of suspended particles (i.e. "backscatter"), while providing more flexible composition space.

Buoyancy Arm: Helps balance the negative buoyancy of the camera, reduces arm fatigue, and makes shooting more stable.

If you only use GoPro or a small camera, you may not need it for the time being; but if you use a micro single/SLR + external flash, they are almost essential accessories.

2. Choosing an extension arm: How to determine the appropriate length?
The size of the extension arm is usually calculated as a single arm length (such as 9 inches, 11 inches, etc.). Things to consider when choosing:

✅ Distance between camera and flash:

Small camera (such as Olympus TG series) → 9-11 inch single arm

Mirrorless/SLR + dual flash → 16-20 inch single arm (to ensure that the light can bypass suspended particles)

✅ Shooting habits:

Wide-angle shooting (such as corals, large scenes) → (11-24 inches) to make the light more dispersed

Macro shooting → Shorter arm (5-7 inches) to avoid excessive light dispersion

3. Choice of buoyancy arm: How to match the buoyancy of your equipment?
The function of the buoyancy arm is to offset the negative buoyancy of the camera, allowing you to hold the camera more easily underwater. Things to consider when choosing:

✅ Weight of camera + housing:

Small camera → 1-2 small buoyancy blocks

Heavy SLR + housing plus dual flash → 2-4 large buoyancy arms may be required

✅ Buoyancy test method:

Test the equipment in a swimming pool or calm water (without weight).

If the camera sinks significantly → need to add buoyancy arms.

If the camera is too buoyant → reduce buoyancy blocks or adjust weights.

4. Budget and upgrade strategy: How to avoid wasting money?
The biggest fear of novices is buying the wrong size or buying a bunch of accessories that are not used. Here are some practical suggestions:

✅ Buy in stages:

First buy a basic extension arm (such as 11-inch single arm x2).

Based on the actual shooting experience, decide whether to add buoyancy arms or adjust the length.

✅ Second-hand market & rental:

Many diving photography communities have second-hand equipment for sale, which is cost-effective.

Some diving shops provide equipment rental, which can be tried before purchase.

✅ Consult experienced photographers:

Participate in diving photography workshops or online communities to get advice.

Summary
Remember that underwater photography equipment is gradually improved, and you don’t have to buy all the accessories at once. Start with the core equipment first and adjust according to actual needs to avoid waste!
